About this Issue
Hédi Bouraoui (born 1932, Sfax, Tunisia) is one of the most prolific and wide-ranging figures in Francophone literature — the author of more than fifty books spanning poetry, fiction, essay, and literary criticism. This special issue of CELAAN Review offers a comprehensive critical assessment of his work and its place in world literature.
Bouraoui's concept of transculturation — the dynamic interchange between cultures that produces new, hybrid forms of expression — has been central to his writing since the 1960s. Contributors examine his poetry collections, his novels (including Retour à Thyna, translated into English as Return to Thyna by Éditions Les Mains Secrètes), and his theoretical writings on Francophone and intercultural literature.
The issue also includes an extended interview with Bouraoui, in which he reflects on his trajectory from Tunisia to France to Canada, his relationship with the French language, and his vision of a literature that belongs to no single nation or tradition.
