About this Issue
Tunisian-born actor Abdellatif Kechiche made his directorial debut with La Faute à Voltaire (Poetical Refugee) in 2000. Since then, he has turned his hand exclusively to directing and writing. His films — L'Esquive (Games of Love and Chance) (2003), La Graine et le mulet (The Secret of the Grain) (2007), Vénus noire (Black Venus) (2010), and La Vie d'Adèle (Blue is the Warmest Color) (2013) — have consistently garnered both general and critical attention.
Kechiche's oeuvre is known for its social realism (though he disputes this term himself), its stories of Maghrebian immigration, and its focus on youth. Yet his work explores many other themes, and demonstrates significantly diverse literary, cultural and cinematic influences. It holds a place in contemporary cinema that suggests an impact on the genre for years to come.
